office lexicon

now that i'm back in "the man's" grip, i'm exposed to the daily shameful office vernacular. if you work or have ever worked in such an environment (and/or if you've seen office space) you can appreciate these all too well. every office has its own foreign language, but i'm trying to keep it pretty general. i'd venture to say that on any given day, in any corporate office in america, one of the following phrases can be heard:

- hey there [enter name here]...workin' hard or hardly workin'?
- let's do lunch sometime. (i would say that i'm a connoisseur of unrealized lunch invites. i collect them like baseball cards)
- i've got a one o'clock (before the corporate workplace, no one would have claimed a "one o'clock." it used to refer to a time that came twice a day, not a meeting)
- havin' fun? well...are you at least makin' money? hey, that's fun. (honest...i get this at least once a week)
- another day another dollar
- same $h!t, different day
- i'd like to back up and take a 30,000 foot view. (why 30,000? always,...30,000)
- here comes trouble.
- keep this one on your radar.
- you're not letting so and so corrupt you, are you?
- no, no...i'm trying not to corrupt so and so. (followed by desperate laughter...or is it crying?)
- right now i'm having difficulties seeing through the weeds. (outdoors analogies are imperative to maintain semi-sanity)
- did you get that memo i sent?
- i'd like us to be on the same page...
- we'll touch base next week. (translation: i don't want to talk to you right now. i don't even want to talk with you next week. i'm counting on you forgetting this conversation ever took place. look into this light.)

please comment and add to the list. what are some standard phrases where you work?

The same 3 or 4 teachers always have a "countdown" to summer break...no matter where we are in the school year. I'll pass one of them and say, "Good morning! How are you doing today?" And they'll stare blankly at me and mutter, "86 more school days left."
